CIPM Inducts 1,097 New Members, Reiterates Legal Mandate for HR Practice in Nigeria

The Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM), the statutory regulatory body for Human Resource Management in Nigeria, has formally inducted 1,097 new members into the Institute at its 64th Induction Ceremony, held yesterday in Lagos.

Speaking at the ceremony, CIPM President and Chairman of the Governing Council, Mallam Ahmed Ladan Gobir, FCIPM, fnli, reaffirmed that membership of the Institute is not only a professional credential but also a legal requirement for all individuals practising HR in Nigeria.

The President and Chairman of the Governing Council, Mallam Ahmed Ladan Gobir, addressing the inductees at the CIPM 64th Induction ceremony.

“In accordance with the provisions of our enabling Act, CAP I15, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, anyone practising Human Resource Management in Nigeria without CIPM certification is in breach of statutory regulations,” Gobir declared. “This applies across the public and private sectors, including NGOs. The law is clear, and the Institute will continue to uphold its mandate to professionalize and regulate HR practice in Nigeria.”

The induction ceremony welcomed members through three qualifying routes: 21 via the Executive Route, 212 through the HR Practitioners Route, and 864 Associate Members through the Professional Examination Route.

Mallam Gobir described the occasion as more than a formal induction, calling it the beginning of a deeper responsibility. “You have not just joined a professional body; you have joined a movement. You are now architects of workplace excellence, custodians of organizational culture, and guardians of business growth,” he said.

The President also highlighted the global value of CIPM certification, citing mutual recognition agreements with the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) in the UK and the Chartered Professionals in Human Resources (CPHR) in Canada. “Our certificates are global passports,” he noted, encouraging inductees to pursue international opportunities with confidence.

Themed “Human Resource Management: Past, Present and Future”, the event traced the evolution of HR in Nigeria and challenged inductees to shape the future of work with integrity, professionalism, and purpose. A keynote address was delivered by Guest Speaker, Mr. Leslie George, MCIPM, who was commended for his vast experience and inspiring insights.

In his closing remarks, Mallam Gobir charged the inductees to carry the CIPM badge with pride and commitment. “HR is not just about people; it’s about the power of people,” he said. “As HR professionals, you are now part of a legacy that is transforming companies, cultures, and countries.”

The 64th Induction Ceremony served as a reminder of CIPM’s unwavering role in enforcing standards, advancing professionalism, and ensuring legal compliance within the HR profession in Nigeria.
