Membership by Examination Route

The minimum educational requirement for student admission is a degree (HND/Bachelor’s Degree) with a minimum of credit in five subjects at the Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) level, which must include English Language and Mathematics. In addition, undergraduates of recognised tertiary institutions (with or without MoU) may be considered for admission, but will ONLY qualify for the Institute’s Induction into the Associate membership grade after graduating from the tertiary institutions. In addition to the SSCE qualification mentioned above, the undergraduates shall provide admission letters from their institutions to qualify for enrolment as student members of the Institute.

At the end of the programme, applicants admitted through this route shall be awarded a Professional Certificate in Human Resource Management and become an Associate Member (ACIPM) of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management.

 

The examining process is in five (5) stages as follows:

Exemption Provisions

Foundation stage is the starting point for holders of first degree in Pure and applied Sciences, other science-related disciplines and undergraduates from recognized tertiary institutions. They must however possess the minimum entry requirements.

  • Intermediate I – Degree (HND/Bachelor) in Management and Social Sciences, Humanities, Arts and Law.
  • Intermediate II – Degree (HND/Bachelor) in Human Resources Management, Industrial Relations and Personnel Management, Sc/MBA in Management and Social Sciences, M.Phil, LLM, Associate certificate (by Examination only) of other relevant and recognised Professional Institutes.
  • Professional Examination I – M.Sc/MBA/PHD in Human Resources Management, Industrial Relations and Personnel Management.

 

Pass mark

The pass mark for each paper of the Institute’s examination is 50%.

Examination Periods and Mode of Writing

The Institute’s examinations are written online and held four times a year (March, June, September and December)

Preparation For The Institute’s Examinations

The Institute does not prepare its students directly for its Examinations. Rather, it accredits and publishes the list of the accredited Study Centres on its website through which Students can adequately prepare for the examinations.

Note: Candidates are to prepare for the examination either by attending lectures at the Institute’s accredited study centres or by studying alone using the provided institute’s syllabus and recommended texts for each subject.

  • As part of the preparatory materials for the examinations, candidates are provided with study materials (e-study packs). These e-study packs are guides and by no means exhaustive of the requirements for success in the examinations. Additional readings across other study materials are recommended and can be found in the examination syllabus.
  • Students are also encouraged to attend the Institute’s national programmes such as the Annual Public lectures, Annual Conference and Exhibition, CIPM’s Branches and Chapters’ meetings, Human Resource Forum, etc.

Membership through the HR Practitioners’ Route

A.

Minimum of Bachelor degree/Higher National Diploma (HND) or its equivalent

B.

Minimum of seven (7) years post-graduation experience (Not inclusive of the one year mandatory NYSC service), five (5) of which must be in Human Resource/Administrative practice at advisory/management level in a structured and recognized organization

The categories of organisations are as follows:

  • Public Sector including MDAs, Ministries, Local Government, Education, etc
  • Oil and Gas
  • Telecommunications
  • Media & Advertising
  • Transport
  • Banking & Insurance
  • Manufacturing
  • Professional Institutes
  • *Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs)
  • Others (please specify the category of organization)

NOTE
The categories above include Multi-national companies, Publicly quoted companies, Private companies in all sectors, etc.

Central Bank of Nigeria, NASME, etc define SMEs as “businesses with turnover of less than N100MM per annum and/ or less than 300 employees”. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in a stand-alone definition defines an SME according to asset base and number of staff employed. The criteria are an asset base between N5 million and N500 million, and a staff strength between 11 and 300 employees.

C.

Currently employed and occupying a position not less than Supervisor/Manager or its equivalent in the private sector or Grade Level 10 or its equivalent in the public
sector.

D.

Demonstrable cognate experience and competence in at least five (5) of the following core areas of Human Resource Management:

  • Human Resource Management
  • Resourcing and Talent Planning
  • Performance Management System
  • Rewards and Remuneration Management
  • Learning and Talent Development
  • Change Management
  • Industrial and Employee Relations
  • Employee Engagement
  • Diversity and Inclusiveness

E.

Record of attendance from at least five (5) relevant Human Resource Management programmes or related Management training programmes within the last seven (7) years

F.

Two reference details MUST be provided as part of the application process (one of the references must be supplied by the current/most recent employer).

G.

Most recent appointment or promotion letter stating current position.

H.

Applicants who meet the above requirements following the assessment and approval by the Governing Council would be required to participate in both a 2-day mandatory training titled: “Contemporary Human Resource Management Practice: Issues and Challenges” and a Development Assessment Centre.

I.

Upon successful completion at the Development Assessment Centre, applicants shall be inducted as Associate Members.

Membership through the Executive Route

A.

Minimum of twelve (12) years post-graduation experience (Not inclusive of the one (1) year mandatory NYSC Service), six (6) years of core HR/ Administrative experience, five (5) of which must be at Senior Management/Executive level in a structured/recognized Organisation

  • Transport
  • Banking & Insurance
  • Manufacturing
  • Professional Institutes and

Demonstrable cognate experience and competence in at least five (5) of the following core areas of Human Resource Management:

  • Resourcing and Talent Planning
  • Performance Management System
  • Rewards and Remuneration Management
  • Learning and Talent Development
  • Change Management
  • Industrial and Employee Relations
  • Employee Engagement
  • Diversity and Inclusiveness

F.

Record of attendance at five (5) relevant Human Resource Management programmes or other related Management training programmes in the last five (5) years to ensure that the applicants appreciate the need for continuing professional development

G.

Two reference details MUST be provided as part of the application process (one of the references must be supplied by the current/most recent employer)

H.

Most recent appointment or promotion letter stating current position.

I.

Applicants who meet the above criteria (following assessment by the Institute) will be invited for an interactive session (mandatory experiential Interview). Upon successful assessment at the interview and approval by the Governing Council, you would then be required to participate in a one-day mandatory Programme titled: “Strategic Human Resource Management Master Class” as part of the admission process.

J.

Successful applicants shall be inducted as Full Members of the Institute.

Membership through the Academic Route

This is specifically designed for Lecturers, Vice Chancellors, Professors, Readers, Researchers, Head of Department that lectures Human Resource/ Industrial Relation/ Employee Relation and other related fields.

 

CATEGORY A

A.

Minimum of Bachelor’s degree/HND or its equivalent.

B.

Minimum of seven (7) years post-graduation/NYSC experience.

C.

Currently employed in any recognized higher Institution and occupying a position not less than Lecturer I and II, Graduate Assistants and Head of Department.

D.

Lectures and assesses relevant subject area at undergraduate or Masters Level.

E.

Record of attendance at five (5) relevant Human Resource Management courses/programmes or Authored (individual or jointly) a relevant article, review or other publication in the last 7 years (WITH EVIDENCE OF SAID PUBLICATION).

F.

Last promotion letter stating current position.

G.

Supervises undergraduate or postgraduate level research in a relevant subject area.

H.

Takes part in internal or external HR research.

I.

Participates in funded relevant research.

J.

Two Reference details MUST be provided as part of the application process (one of the references must be supplied by the current/most recent employer/line manager).

K.

Applicants who meet the above criteria (following assessment by the Institute and the approval of Leadership) would be required to participate in a 2-day programme titled: “Contemporary Human Resource Management Practice: Issues and Challenges”.

L.

Successful applicants shall be inducted as Associate Members (ACIPM) of the Institute.

CATEGORY B

A.

Minimum of Master’s degree or its equivalent.

B.

Minimum of twelve (12) years post-graduation/NYSC Lecturing experience or its equivalent.

C.

Currently employed in any recognized higher Institution and occupying a position not less than Senior Lecturers, Vice Chancellors, Reader, Professors, Associate Professors.

D.

Record of attendance at five (5) relevant Human Resource Management courses/programmes or Authored five (5) relevant research/journal articles or other publications in reputable academic or professional media.

E.

Record and evidence of successful completion of Research Projects within the applicant’s core area/specialization with ability to clearly communicate these achievements.

F.

Last promotion letter stating current position.

G.

Supervises postgraduate level research in an HR subject area.

H.

A course examiner in or an external examiner in a defined HR subject area.

I.

Participates in and leads funded research in relevant policy.

J.

Contributes to or leads innovation in the design and delivery of practical HR tools.

K.

Two Reference details MUST be provided as part of the application process (one of the references must be supplied by the current/most recent employer).

L.

Applicants who meet the above criteria (following assessment by the Institute) will be invited for an interactive session (mandatory experiential Interview). Upon successful assessment at the interview and approval by the Leadership, you would then be required to participate in a one-day mandatory Programme titled: “Strategic Human Resource Management Master Class” as part of the admission process.

L.

Successful applicants shall be inducted as Full Members (MCIPM) of the Institute.

Membership through the Military & Paramilitary Route

This is specifically designed for officers who have demonstrable cognate experience and competence in the core areas of Human Resource Management or Administrative responsibilities in the Military and Paramilitary career field.

CATEGORY A

A.

Minimum of Bachelor’s degree/HND/NDA or its equivalent.

B.

Minimum of seven (7) years post-graduation/NYSC experience.

C.

Currently serving and occupying a position not less than Second Lieutenant, Lieutenant, Captain Major, etc or its equivalent in the Military and Paramilitary field.

D.

Contributes to or leads innovation in the design and delivery of practical HR/Tactical/Strategic/Operational tools.

E.

Record of attendance at five (5) training programmes, at least three (3) of the training attended must be in core HR/Tactical/Strategic/Operational subjects in the last 7 years.

F.

Last promotion letter should state current designation.

G.

Two reference details MUST be provided as part of the application process (one of the references must be supplied by the current/most recent employer/line manager).

H.

Applicants who meet the above criteria (following assessment by the Institute and the approval of Leadership) would be required to participate in a 2-day programme titled: “Contemporary Human Resource Management Practice: Issues and Challenges”.

CATEGORY B

A.

Minimum of Bachelor’s degree/HND/ NDA or its equivalent.

B.

Minimum of twelve (12) years post-graduation/NYSC or its equivalent.

C.

Currently serving and occupying a position not less than Colonel, Brigadier General, Major General and above, or its equivalent in the Military and paramilitary sector.

D.

Record of attendance at five (5) training programmes, at least Three (3) of the training attended must be in core HR/Tactical/Strategic/Operational subjects in the last 5 years.

E.

Record and evidence of successful completion of cross-functional projects outside Core area/ Specialization with ability to clearly communicate these achievements. (e.g. Foreign Posting, Command operations, Tactical/Strategic Operations etc).

F.

Last promotion letter should state current designation.

G.

Contributes to or leads innovation in the design and delivery of practical HR/Tactical/Strategic/Operational tools.

H.

Two Reference details MUST be provided as part of the application process (one of the references must be supplied by the current/most recent employer).

I.

Applicants who meet the above criteria (following assessment by the Institute) will be invited for an interactive session (mandatory experiential Interview). Upon successful assessment at the interview and approval by the Leadership, you would then be required to participate in a one-day mandatory Programme titled: “Strategic Human Resource Management Master Class” as part of the admission process.

J.

Successful applicants shall be inducted as Full Members (MCIPM) of the Institute.
