Leadership Crucial to Organisational and National Efficiency

The Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria (CIPM) says effective leadership plays a critical role in achieving organisational and national efficiency.

Olusegun Mojeed, president and Chairman of the Governing Council, CIPM, said this at the ongoing 54th International Conference and Exhibition (ICE) in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital.

At the event, themed ‘Leading People, Growing Nations’, Mojeed said countries, especially those on the African continent, are currently facing leadership gaps, which stifled their growth and development.

He said that recent events in the world had proven that the world needs effective leadership for growing people and eventually, growing nations.

Mojeed said the objective of the conference is to make sure that people learn from qualified instructors, and go back to their different organisations, both in the public and private sectors, to apply what they learnt to improve their services.

He said the conference would also strengthen business acumen, understanding of macroeconomic trends and their impact on people management practices.

At a technical session titled ‘Preventing and Managing Burnout in Challenging Times’, Gbenga Adebayo, chief executive officer of Living Health International, advised workers to go for regular medical check-ups to help them stay on top of their health.

He said regular check-ups can help find potential health issues before they become a problem.

Adebayo, a health communication specialist, warned that lack of adequate sleep is killing people while adding that an adult needs 6-8 hours of sleep daily.

“Sleep is also vital. If you want to go for an examination, the worst thing you can do to yourself is to go in without sleeping,” he said.

“Your body needs rest. If you don’t take care of yourself, one way or another, you will pay.

“If you are a person that wakes up with low energy, no passion, no zeal, you are getting close to burnout.”

To cope with stress and burnout, Adebayo recommended increasing self-awareness and self-care as well as improving work-life balance.
